OpenAI Dots: what the AI agents do and who can use them

What are OpenAI Dots?

Dots are OpenAI’s always-on AI agents for ongoing work in ChatGPT. Unlike a regular chat that mainly responds to each message, a dot can keep making progress between conversations, remember context for continuing tasks and bring back decisions or results for you to review.

OpenAI says each dot has its own cloud computer and can use apps you choose to connect. The company’s examples include researching a topic, reviewing connected information and helping manage a longer project. You can check its activity and give it more direction.

Who can use Dots?

OpenAI says the rollout is gradual:

• **Pro:** Rolling out in supported markets except the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
• **Business Premium:** Rolling out in supported ChatGPT regions.
• **Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare:** An administrator can enable the beta for a workspace.

Access may take several days to reach an account. OpenAI says the first dot is included in Pro and Business Premium at no extra cost. Check ChatGPT on desktop to see whether the option has appeared for your account.

How do you get started?

Create a dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or on desktop web, then choose a name, set it a goal and connect only the apps it needs. OpenAI says you can message a dot in ChatGPT and connect channels such as Slack. At launch, you cannot create a dot on mobile.

What controls should you check?

Review app permissions before connecting services. Your dot’s cloud computer is separate from your own computer unless you choose to connect the local computer. OpenAI provides custom rules for actions that can be allowed, require approval or be handed back to you. Its help guidance also says dots can make mistakes, so check important work before relying on it.

Availability and features can vary by account, plan and rollout stage. If Dots are not visible yet, check the Help Center and your workspace administrator’s settings.
