How does net run rate work?

The actual formula

Add up every run your team scored in the tournament and divide by the overs you faced. Do the same for runs conceded and overs bowled. Subtract. That difference is NRR.

If a team is bowled out before the allotted overs, they are still charged the full overs for the innings they batted. That is why a collapse is expensive for NRR, not just for the result.

What it is not

• It is not the run rate of the last match alone.
• Winning by 1 wicket with a ball to spare barely moves NRR.
• Rain-shortened games use the revised overs, not the original 20 or 50.
