To check a traffic e-challan, open the official MoRTH portal at echallan.parivahan.gov.in and choose Get Challan Details/Check Challan Status. Use whichever accepted identifier the form requests, such as challan, vehicle registration or driving licence number, complete verification, then check status before paying through the official portal. Beware fake SMS links.

# How to check an e-Challan online in India

Reviewed 25 October 2026. India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways runs the official e-Challan portal for digital traffic enforcement services. If you received a traffic fine, open [echallan.parivahan.gov.in](https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/) yourself rather than tapping a payment link in a text message. The official website specifically warns about impersonator websites and apps.

Check your challan by number or vehicle details

1. Visit the official e-Challan portal (opens in a new tab). 2. Select Get Challan Details or Check Challan Status under the site's services. Page labels may differ for the NextGen portal or a particular state. 3. Choose an available identifier: Challan Number, Vehicle Number (registration), or DL Number (driving licence), if displayed. 4. Type your details accurately and complete any captcha or verification required. 5. Review the returned challan entry: issuing authority/state, date, vehicle or DL, charge and payment status where shown. 6. If it is legitimately due, use the payment method presented within the official service. Save the payment receipt and transaction reference.

If the central portal directs your state to the NextGen e-Challan service or Delhi Traffic Police portal, follow that official redirect rather than assuming every jurisdiction uses the same form.

Paid a challan but it still says pending?

Do not immediately pay again. Check your bank/UPI payment entry, retain your transaction number, and use the portal's Check Pending Transaction or other official payment-verification option. A separate official service supports Download Payment Receipt for successfully paid challans. A delayed status update does not by itself mean that a second payment is necessary.

If the official portal remains inconsistent after checking the transaction, contact the e-Challan helpdesk or the authority identified on your challan. The portal lists helpdesk-echallan@gov.in for technical issues.

What if the challan looks wrong?

Look for the Grievance option on the government website and any state-specific instructions. The portal may route some complaints to a NextGen service or a separate state/Delhi authority. Record the challan number, vehicle number and the precise concern before filing. This guide cannot decide whether a violation is legally valid.

Fake e-Challan SMS and APK warning

The Ministry's portal warns of fraudulent sites and mobile apps impersonating e-Challan. Red flags include payment to an unknown personal UPI address, a shortened domain, a request to install an APK sent over WhatsApp, or a caller asking you to reveal an OTP. Never share passwords, payment credentials or OTPs through unsolicited calls, messages or links. Type the government site yourself.
