UPI Lite is a small-value UPI payment feature. You add money from a linked bank account, then use the Lite balance for eligible payments without entering your UPI PIN each time. The current balance limit is ₹5,000 and the per-transaction limit is ₹1,000.

UPI Lite is a small-value payment feature inside supported UPI apps. It lets you keep a limited balance linked to your bank account and use that balance for everyday payments without entering your UPI PIN for each eligible transaction.

Current UPI Lite limits

The overall UPI Lite balance limit is ₹5,000, while the per-transaction limit is ₹1,000. Apps may also apply their own usage rules within the regulatory framework, so the exact experience can differ slightly between providers.

How UPI Lite works

When you enable UPI Lite in a supported UPI app, you choose an eligible linked bank account and add money to your Lite balance. Adding money requires normal UPI authentication.

After that, eligible small-value payments are deducted from the UPI Lite balance instead of directly hitting the bank's core system in real time. This is why UPI Lite is designed to make frequent small payments quicker and reduce clutter in your bank statement.

Do you need a UPI PIN every time?

For eligible UPI Lite payments, you generally do not need to enter your UPI PIN for every transaction. The app itself may still require device authentication such as a passcode, fingerprint or face unlock.

Is UPI Lite a separate bank account?

No. It is not a separate savings account. The Lite balance is linked to your existing bank account through your UPI app.

Why use UPI Lite?

It is useful for small, frequent payments such as tea, groceries, local transport, parking or other low-value purchases. It can also keep your main bank statement cleaner because individual Lite payments may be shown inside the UPI app while the top-up appears on the bank statement.

What happens if you close UPI Lite?

If you disable or close UPI Lite, the remaining balance is returned to the linked bank account according to the app and bank's process.

Does UPI Lite work on bank holidays?

UPI services are designed for 24/7 availability, so a bank holiday does not by itself stop UPI Lite payments. Branch services can still be closed. See Janooji's [India bank holidays guide](/everyday-india/india-bank-holidays) for how branch holidays and UPI availability differ.

One thing to remember

UPI Lite limits and supported banks can change over time. Check your UPI app for the latest supported banks and transaction rules before relying on a specific limit.

Eligible UPI Lite payments generally do not require a UPI PIN for every transaction, although the app may still require device authentication.
