How this is calculated

Each monthly deposit grows by (1 + r/n)n × t from the month it is made until maturity, where r is the annual rate, n is the number of compounding periods a year and t is the time left in years. The maturity amount is the sum of all deposits grown this way, and the interest is that sum minus what you deposited.

  • A deposit is made at the start of every month for the whole tenure, and each deposit earns interest from the day it is made.
  • The interest rate is fixed for the whole tenure. The rate you enter is an assumption, not a bank offer.
  • Interest compounds quarterly by default, a common convention for recurring deposits in India. Check the compounding your bank states. A part of a quarter grows at the same compound rate.
  • Banks apply their own day-count, rounding and penalties for a late instalment; TDS is not deducted. The result is an estimate, not a bank quote.

Questions

How is RD maturity calculated?

Each monthly deposit is compounded from the month it is made until maturity, A = P(1 + r/n)^(n t) for the time left, and the results are added up. Many Indian banks compound RDs quarterly, which is the default here.

Will my bank pay exactly this amount?

Not necessarily. Banks differ in day-count, rounding and rules for a late instalment, and TDS can apply on the interest. This tool only applies the compound-interest formula to the numbers you enter.

Which interest rate should I enter?

The rate your bank or the post office offers for your tenure. Janooji does not publish deposit rates, and the 6.5% shown at the start is only an example.

Is the interest on an RD taxable?

Interest on a recurring deposit is generally taxable as income and the bank may deduct TDS; check the current rules. This calculator shows interest before any tax.

Is RD interest compounded quarterly?

Many banks in India compound RD interest quarterly, so that is the default here. Monthly, half-yearly and yearly are offered for comparison. Check the compounding your bank states.
