Generative AI in simple terms

Generative AI is software that can create text, images, audio, video or code from a prompt. It learns patterns from large amounts of data, then produces a new output based on the instructions and context it receives.

It does not “know” facts in the same way an official database does. A fluent answer can still contain a mistake.

What can it help with?

People use generative AI to explain a topic, draft an email, translate text, make a study plan, brainstorm ideas, write or debug code, and summarise material. It is most useful as a starting point that a person reviews.

For work or study, a good workflow is: ask for a draft, check the important claims against reliable sources, then edit the result for your own context.

What are its limits?

Generative AI can produce confident-looking answers that are incomplete, outdated or wrong. This is sometimes called a hallucination. It can also misunderstand an ambiguous prompt or miss an important exception.

The risk matters more for medical, legal, financial, government, exam and safety-related questions. In those cases, use AI to help understand the issue, then verify the answer with the relevant primary source or qualified professional.

Can AI search the internet?

Some AI products can access current web sources and some cannot. Even when web access is available, the model can still misread or overstate a source. Check the cited page itself when the detail matters.

How to use it safely in India

Do not share Aadhaar numbers, bank details, passwords, UPI PINs, exam credentials, confidential work files or private documents unless you understand exactly how the service handles that data.

For official information, check the relevant Indian government department, bank, school board or regulator. For company or product claims, prefer the original company documentation over a copied social-media post.

AI is useful when it saves you time without replacing judgment. Treat an answer as something to verify, not as proof by itself.
