Gold Jewellery Calculator

Price a piece of gold jewellery from a gold rate you enter: weight, purity, making charges and GST shown separately. Janooji does not provide a live gold rate.

The gold rate is the one you enter. Janooji does not look up or publish a live gold rate; use the rate your jeweller quotes today for the same purity.

3% is the rate on the total value of gold jewellery, making charges included. Change it only if your bill shows a different rate.

How this is calculated

Gold value = weight × rate for the purity. A 24K rate is scaled by karat ÷ 24 (22K is 22/24 of the 24K rate). Making charges are added as a percentage of the gold value, a rate per gram or a fixed amount, as you choose. GST is then worked out on each part and shown separately; the total is the subtotal plus GST.

GST: the CBIC guidance for jewellers says 3% is payable on the total transaction value of jewellery, whether or not the making charge is shown separately, so the same rate is applied to the gold value, the making charges and any other charges. The 5% rate often quoted for making charges applies to job work for a jeweller who is given gold to work on, not to buying finished jewellery.

The gold rate is the one you enter. Janooji does not look up or publish a live gold rate; use the rate your jeweller quotes today for the same purity. Jewellers may round the weight or the rate and may add hallmarking or wastage charges that you can enter above.

Questions

Does this show today's gold rate?

No. You enter the rate your jeweller quotes. Janooji does not fetch or publish a live gold rate, so the result is only as current as the rate you type.

How much GST is charged on gold jewellery?

CBIC guidance for jewellers says GST is payable at 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether or not the making charge is shown separately. The calculator applies that rate to the gold value, the making charges and any other charges, and shows each part. You can change the rate if your bill shows a different one.

Is GST on making charges 5%?

Not when you buy finished jewellery: the 3% applies to the whole value. The 5% figure is the rate for job work, where a job worker charges a jeweller or manufacturer only for making the jewellery from gold that was supplied to them.

How is 22K gold priced from the 24K rate?

Karat counts parts of gold in 24, so 22K is 22/24 of 24K. The calculator multiplies the 24K rate by 22 ÷ 24 for the value of the gold, or uses the rate as entered if it is already for the purity you chose. Your jeweller may price it slightly differently.

What if I give my own old gold to the jeweller?

This calculator prices finished jewellery bought at the rates you enter. How an exchange of old gold is valued and billed is the jeweller's arrangement, so ask for the old-gold deduction and the bill before you agree.

What if I supply gold and pay only for making it?

That is job work, taxed differently from buying finished jewellery. CBIC guidance gives a 5% rate on job charges for a registered job worker. This calculator does not cover it.
